Drive under the canopy of ancient oaks and banyans that guard the entrance to Old Cutler Road. Upon reaching the coast, discover the Atoll Pool, a circle of coral stone that emerges from the sea as a monument to organic architecture. Feel the freshness of the bay water flowing in and out through the natural floodgates, maintaining a perfect temperature and unique clarity. Walk along the paths that border the mangroves and see how the aerial roots act as guardians of the coastline. It is an immersion in “Liquid Symmetry”, where the calm of the interior lagoon contrasts with the vibrant energy of the open bay, offering a refuge of unparalleled design and nature.
Level: Safe (Regulated/Park). Matheson Hammock is a county park with active security and lifeguards in the pool area during hours of operation. It is a family and very safe environment. Caution is advised when walking on the coral stone walls, as they can become slippery with moisture and natural algae. Due to its location in dense “hammock”, attention should be paid to the local fauna (iguanas and birds) and avoid feeding the animals.
Grade: Gold. The park has recently been adapted to meet high accessibility standards. The pool area has ramps and paved paths. There is accessible parking close to all main areas, including the Red Fish Grill cafe. Public toilets are equipped for people with reduced mobility and there are picnic areas with adapted tables under the shade of trees.
The North Wall of the Atoll Pool. Walk along the coral stone edge that separates the pool from the open bay at low tide. From this point, you have a 360-degree view: the Miami skyline in the distance, the calm of the indoor pool and the force of the Atlantic at your feet. The evening light dyes the stone a warm orange color that, added to the reflection of the water, creates the definitive visual capture of the harmony between man and sea.
