The Kyoto Garden is not a recreational park, it was designed specifically for Zen meditation. The acoustics of the garden, lined with trees and stone, make any human noise cross the pond and break the harmony. Don’t listen to music without headphones, put your phone on silent and speak only in whispers.
The principle is: observe, do not intervene. It is strictly prohibited to feed huge Koi fish (bread makes them seriously ill) and peacocks. The latter are beautiful but territorial birds; keep a safe distance and never try to touch them or chase them for a photo.
The only way to absorb the real magic of the garden is to be at the gate of Holland Park at 07:30 AM to enter right at 08:00 AM (its opening). Starting at 10:00 AM, crowds and groups destroy the contemplative atmosphere. It is a mandatory morning visit.
Although the rest of Holland Park is very accessible, Kyoto Garden presents challenges: there are small stone bridges without railings over the pond, rustic rock steps, and fine gravel paths. If you use a wheelchair, you can enjoy the panoramic view from the bottom, but navigating the internal path will be complex.
Hidden in the heart of elegant Holland Park lies a gift of peace from the city of Kyoto: an authentic Japanese-style garden designed to reflect absolute harmony. The hypnotic sound of its layered stone waterfall sets the rhythm of the place, while huge Koi fish swim in meditative patterns in the pool below.
It is common to find the majestic resident peacocks wandering freely among the stone lanterns (tōrō). This garden is a sensory anchor, meticulously designed to induce a state of pure contemplation in the middle of the London metropolis.

Entering through the main gate of Holland Park, you will walk among traditional English oak trees until the landscape changes abruptly. A wooden door will welcome you to Kyoto Garden. The route is short but dense: you will cross a small stone bridge that will leave you in front of the main waterfall. To your right, fine gravel paths wind between Japanese maples. Find an empty stone bench, sit down and just watch the water. There is no final “destination” in this garden, the journey itself is the purpose.
Green Zone: Maximum Security. Holland Park is one of the safest and most prestigious parks in London.
Inclusion Grade: Bronze/Silver. Holland Park is generally accessible, but within the specific Kyoto Garden, there are narrow stone bridges, some natural steps, and gravel paths that make mobility with wheelchairs or walkers difficult (though not entirely impossible).
Stand on the small stone bridge just below the waterfall. From here you have the perfect angle to capture the falling water and, if you are lucky and remain quiet enough, a peacock could slowly cross the frame from behind.
