Begin your visit in the Lower Chapel, an intimate and somber space dedicated to the palace servants, decorated in deep blues and golds. The real shock comes when climbing the narrow spiral staircase: suddenly, you emerge in the Upper Chapel. Here, the walls seem to have disappeared. You are surrounded by 600 square meters of 13th century stained glass that filters light in thousands of shades of purple, ruby and azure. Walk slowly through the center of the ship and observe how the light patterns change depending on the position of the sun. It is a giant kaleidoscope that completely envelops you.
Level: Low (High Security Zone). Being inside the Palace of Justice, the security control is similar to that of an airport. Sharp objects or large suitcases are not allowed. The space is small and fills up quickly, so keep an eye on your belongings. The spiral staircase to the upper chapel is very narrow and can be overwhelming at busy times.
Grade: Bronze. The lower chapel is accessible, but the main access to the upper chapel (the jewel of the place) is through very narrow spiral stairs. However, there is a hidden elevator available for people with reduced mobility; must be requested from security personnel upon entry. For people with light sensitivity, color contrasts can be intense. The acoustics are excellent for people with visual disabilities, allowing you to perceive the immensity of the space through the echo.
The Crystal Heart. Be in the exact center of the upper chapel at 11:00 AM. Look towards the large rose window on the western façade. If the sun is direct, the stained glass patterns will be projected onto the stone floor, allowing you to “walk on the light.” It is the moment of maximum chromatic intensity.
