Enter through the monumental portal at number 11 Boulevard Montmartre. The air changes immediately; The noise of traffic becomes a rhythmic echo under the iron and glass dome. Walk slowly, ignoring the initial gastronomic displays, to look for the jewel in the crown: the former maison Stern, a historic engraver whose carved wooden façade is a monument in itself. Lose yourself in the side branches (Galerie Feydeau or Galerie Montmartre) to observe stamp collectors in their natural habitat. The tour ends on Rue Saint-Marc, where natural light once again gives way to the city, leaving you with the feeling of having crossed a perfectly preserved time tunnel.
Level: High (Urban Shelter). Being a private space but with public access, it has constant passive security due to the shops and restaurants. It is a perfect place to shelter from sudden storms or to walk safely in a busy area of Paris. The only precaution is to keep an eye on your belongings in the terrace areas of the bistros, where the flow of people is denser.
Grade: Gold. The passage is completely flat and does not have steps in its main axis, which makes it ideal for wheelchairs and strollers. The floor is made of smooth stone and wood, well maintained. For people with hearing sensitivity, it is a perfect refuge as the roof structure significantly dampens the noise of the cars on the Grand Boulevards.
The Stern Axis. Position yourself right in front of the entrance to the old Stern printing press. It captures the perspective towards the north, seeking that the glass structure of the roof guides the eye towards Boulevard Montmartre. The mix of the dark wood of the tents and the brightness of the ceiling creates a spectacular dynamic range. If you go on a rainy day, the sound of drops hitting the glass on the Stern adds an auditory layer that few travelers manage to document.
