VIP access begins at Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy. After descending the 131 spiral steps, the air becomes dense and fresh. Your premium tour will take you beyond conventional barriers, allowing you to observe historical inscriptions from the 18th century that the general public never sees. You will walk through the “Gallery of the Quarries” before reaching the threshold of the ossuary: “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort”. There, the light of your flashlight will reveal perfect walls built with tibias and skulls, forming geometric designs that defy the conventional idea of a cemetery. The silence here is a physical entity that accompanies you until the final ascent of 112 steps that return you to the surface.
Level: Medium (Restricted Space). The environment is humid (80%) and the temperature is low (14°C), so it is recommended to wear a light jacket even in summer. It is not suitable for people with heart, respiratory or claustrophobia problems. The floor may be slippery. Being a sacred space, silence and absolute respect are required; touching skeletal remains is strictly prohibited and penalized.
Grade: Bronze. Unfortunately, the Catacombs are not wheelchair accessible due to 131 descending and 112 ascending steps, as well as narrow hallways and uneven floors. For people with low vision, lighting is poor, so the use of a high-intensity flashlight and a personal guide is highly recommended.
The Altar of Shadows. Look for the sector of the crypts with 18th century engravings near the ‘Samaritan Fountain’. Turn off your light for 10 seconds to experience absolute mineral silence and then illuminate the bone walls from the side to capture the texture and relief that the overhead light hides.
