Located in the Public Square of Hudson Yards, The Vessel welcomes you with its polished steel skin that reflects the sky and surrounding skyscrapers. As you enter its honeycomb structure, each of its 80 landings offers you a different view of Manhattan and the Hudson River. Following its recent security upgrade, the route integrates subtle steel mesh that, far from hiding sight, adds a layer of technical protection that reinforces its identity as a safe space for urban exploration. It is the perfect complement to your passage through the High Line, culminating in a crescendo of geometry and light.
Level: Maximum (Enhanced Safety). Upon reopening in 2026, The Vessel has floor-to-ceiling steel mesh safety barriers and strict access protocols. Individual entry is not allowed (it must be in groups of two or more) and there are security patrols on each level. The Hudson Yards area is one of the safest and most monitored areas in Manhattan.
Grade: Gold. Despite its thousands of steps, The Vessel is accessible to people with reduced mobility through an elevator that gives access to specific observation levels. There is a priority line for people with disabilities. It is recommended to reserve tickets in advance to ensure elevator access during high demand times.
The Vortex from the Base. Before going up, stand exactly in the center of the base and look up. The convergence of the stairs creates an infinite kaleidoscope effect. It is the most iconic technical shot and the one that best captures the geometric essence of Thomas Heatherwick’s work.
