From the moment you cross one of its pedestrian bridges, Little Island transports you to a world of artificial hills and secret gardens. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the park is raised on concrete “tulips” that create a varied and fascinating topography. You can explore its amphitheater The Amph, which appears to float on the water, or climb to the highest viewpoints to enjoy an uninterrupted panoramic view of Lower Manhattan and the New Jersey skyline. It is a total immersion experience where the city seems to be left behind, replaced by the aroma of flowers and the river breeze.
Level: High (Managed Public Space). The park has security personnel and ambassadors who constantly patrol. It is well lit and the railings are designed to offer safety without blocking your view. It is a very familiar and controlled environment, ideal for visits at any time of the day.
Grade: Gold. Little Island is fully ADA accessible. All the paths, although undulating, are suitable for wheelchairs and there are strategic lifts to reach the highest areas. The park offers free loaner wheelchairs at the entrance (with valid ID).
The Amph. Head to the wooden amphitheater that overlooks the Hudson River. At dusk, the sun sets directly in front of you, illuminating the concrete structure and flowers in golden tones. It is the perfect place to feel the immensity of the river while the architecture of Little Island frames your view.
