The trip begins at the 59th Street and 2nd Avenue station. As you enter the cabin, you’ll feel the gentle ascension as Manhattan’s skyscrapers seem to shrink. The structure of the Queensboro Bridge unfolds beside you like an infinite steel network, while the East River shimmers in the sunlight. During the descent to Roosevelt Island, you will have a panoramic view of the United Nations and the Midtown skyline. Upon arriving on the island, the environment changes drastically: a space of parks, brutalist architecture and an unusual peace just minutes from the intensity of Manhattan.
Level: High (Public Transit Standard). The Tramway is operated under strict safety protocols and has engine redundancy systems. The boarding area is safe and is integrated into the city’s public transportation system. Use of OMNY is recommended for quick, contactless access.
Grade: Gold. The Tramway is 100% accessible. Both stations have operational elevators and the cabins are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and baby strollers comfortably. Staff are available on both platforms to assist with boarding if required.
The Zenith of the East River. When the cabin reaches its highest point above the river, look south. You’ll have an aligned view of the United Nations building and the Empire State Building in the background. It’s time to capture the depth of Manhattan in a single frame. Tip: Try to position yourself near the front windows of the cabin if you are going towards the island.
