From its beginning on Gansevoort Street, next to the Whitney Museum, to its end at Hudson Yards, the High Line offers you a visual catalog of the evolution of Manhattan. You will walk on the old steel beams of the New York Central Railroad, surrounded by plants that seem to grow of their own will, emulating the “wild” landscape that inhabited these tracks during decades of abandonment. Along the way, you’ll discover contemporary art installations, the iconic Chelsea Market at your feet, and the 10th Street Amphitheater, where you can sit and watch the flow of the city as if it were a movie screen.
Level: High (Protected Trail). The park is constantly patrolled by High Line security personnel and has efficient lighting throughout the entire route. It is a very familiar and safe area to walk alone, although it is recommended to be careful with personal belongings due to the high density of tourists in certain sections.
Grade: Gold. The High Line is a model of urban accessibility. It has multiple operating elevators on Gansevoort St, 14th St, 23rd St and 30th St. The path is completely flat and firm, ideal for wheelchairs and baby strollers. It is recommended to enter via Gansevoort St for the most natural flow to the north.
The 10th Street Viewpoint. Stop at the wooden amphitheater that overlooks 10th Avenue. It’s the perfect place to capture the symmetry of the avenue flanked by industrial and modern architecture, with the Empire State Building looming in the background if the angle is right. Ideal during the “Golden Hour”.
