The journey begins at the modern **Whitehall Terminal**, a glass and steel structure that filters the harbor light. As you board one of the iconic orange ships, you will feel the roar of the engines that take you on a 25-minute journey to **St George**. During the crossing, you will pass a few meters from Liberty Island. It’s time to head out onto the outside deck to feel the breeze and capture the perfect photo of the receding Manhattan skyline. Upon arriving at Staten Island, the port welcomes you with a different calm, before embarking on the return trip that will return you to the heart of the urban bustle.
Level: High (Transit Security). The ferry is operated by the DOT and has a constant presence of the NYPD and K9 units. The terminals are under 24/7 surveillance. It is recommended not to leave luggage unattended and pay attention to security announcements during boarding. It is one of the safest ways to cross the port.
Grade: Gold. Both terminals (Whitehall and St. George) are fully accessible via elevators and ramps. Users with wheelchairs or strollers are recommended to use the lower boarding platform for smoother and more direct access. Ferry staff are trained to assist in the boarding process.
Freedom Passage. Stand on the right (starboard) side of the ferry when you leave Manhattan. Just halfway there, the ship passes its closest point to the Statue of Liberty. It is the cleanest angle to photograph Lady Liberty with the Jersey City skyline in the background.
