Accessing this garden requires the curiosity of an initiate. You must find the escalator hidden between the wings of the 55 Water Street building. As you go up, the trace of traffic disappears, replaced by the aroma of the garden designed by Ken Smith. The space features a grass amphitheater and a 15-meter LED beacon called the “Beacon of Progress.” From its wooden walkway, the Brooklyn Bridge seems within reach. It is the perfect place to watch the boat traffic in the port while surrounded by seasonal flora that changes with the rhythm of the city, offering a haven of fresh air and uninterrupted views.
Level: Very High (Private Patrol). Being a POPS (Privately Owned Public Space) within a corporate office complex, it has 24-hour private security and surveillance cameras. It is one of the safest points in Lower Manhattan, ideal for relaxing in complete tranquility.
Grade: Gold. Although it is elevated, access is fully inclusive. There is a dedicated elevator in the lobby of 55 Water Street that takes you directly to the garden level. The upper paths are made of level wood, which facilitates the passage of wheelchairs and strollers.
The Beacon Viewpoint. Position yourself at the edge of the wooden walkway, right next to the LED light tower. From here, you have a front view of the Brooklyn Bridge without the crowds of the lower piers. It is the exact point where the bridge’s architecture aligns with the flow of the East River.
