This walk is an early example of “hedge urbanism.” Thanks to its triple-level design, the noise of the highway running below is just a murmur that is lost in the wind of the East River. Flanked by perfectly manicured elm trees and flower beds, the walk offers an uninterrupted view spanning from the Statue of Liberty to the Brooklyn Bridge. It is a space of democratic calm where local residents mingle with travelers in search of the “perfect photo.” Being elevated, the air circulates more freely, offering a cooler microclimate than the interior streets of Brooklyn. It is the ideal place for an introspective walk at dusk, watching the lights of the skyscrapers turn on one by one as if they were urban stars.
Level: Very High (Residential District). Brooklyn Heights is one of the safest and most exclusive neighborhoods in New York. The walk is well lit and frequented by local families and joggers late into the night. It is recommended to maintain the usual caution, but the environment is predominantly calm and monitored by the community itself.
Grade: Gold. The ride is a level, paved platform, ideal for wheelchairs and strollers. The entrances on Montague St and Pierrepont St are natural ramps that facilitate barrier-free access. There are numerous benches along the entire route for frequent breaks, making it one of the most inclusive public spaces in the city.
The Brooklyn Bridge Alignment. Walk to the north end of the boardwalk, near Clark Street. From here, the Brooklyn Bridge aligns perfectly with the skyscrapers of FiDi. It is the exact point where the breeze from the port is most constant and the feeling of floating over the city is absolute.
