The starting point is the Roseto Comunale, at the foot of the Aventine Hill. The climb from the Circus Maximus is steep—the main paved path is the most comfortable option. For reduced mobility, we recommend arriving by taxi or NCC directly to the entrance of the garden (the upper part is flat). By Metro: Line B, Circo Massimo station, and from there approximately 10 minutes on foot uphill.
It is the famous lock of the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta — a keyhole in the door of the Order of Malta that, when you look out, perfectly frames the dome of St. Peter at the bottom of a tunnel of cypress trees. It is completely free, it is on the street and does not require an entrance. It is one of the most surprising optical secrets in Rome and almost no standard tourist knows about it.
The recommended time is from 6:00 PM, with diffuse golden light at dusk. The ideal season is spring, when the bitter orange trees bloom and the perfume of orange blossom permeates the garden before you see anything. Ambient noise is just 35 dB—one of the quietest spots in all of Rome. Avoid summer noons: the garden is small and the heat at the top of the Aventine is intense.
With nuances. The garden itself (Giardino degli Aranci) is flat, quiet and with very low sensory stimulation (SIS Level 1), ideal for all ages. The challenge is getting there: the climb from the Circus Maximus is steep and not suitable for unassisted manual wheelchairs. The interior soil of the garden is gravel, which can cause some instability. For small children and seniors, we recommend vehicle access to the entrance.

Located at the top of the Aventine Hill, this walled park offers one of the most complete panoramic views of the city. The design is symmetrical, with a central hallway framed by umbrella pines. The route includes the exterior visit to the Basilica of Santa Sabina (Paleo-Christian, year 422 AD) and a mandatory stop at the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta to see the famous ‘lock’. The ground is fine gravel and flat within the garden, but access requires a steep climb from the Circus Maximus.

It is probably the safest area in Rome at night. Silent and guarded.
Additional Safety Tip: When going down at night, use the main illuminated path to the Circus Maximus, avoid the park’s shortcuts if you go alone.
