By entering, you are invading the silent tomb of Emperor Hadrian; When you go up, you are walking through medieval dungeons; and when you reach the top, you will be standing under the imposing statue of the archangel Michael who sheathes his sword looking at the city. This fortress is literally the last defense wall of classical civilization.

The approach will be via the Sant’Angelo Bridge, flanked by Bernini’s Angels holding the weapons of the Passion (a free access walk). Upon entering, you will cross the heavy cylindrical wall and ascend a long helical ramp surrounded by the coolness of the ancient stone (the original imperial tomb).
The path passes through catapult courtyards and prisons until reaching the lavish Papal Rooms. We will crown the experience by ascending to the “Terrazza dell’Angelo”, one of the highest viewpoints of the Tiber River, where the direct visual connection with the Dome of Saint Peter justifies the price of admission.
Level: Orange (Outside) / Yellow (Inside). On the outside bridge there are constant “free bracelets” scammers; ignore and walk straight ahead. Inside: the dark ramps and stairs are very slippery if it rains, tread carefully.
Inclusion Grade: Bronze/Silver. Elevator available but subject to frequent breakdowns. If it works, it facilitates almost complete access; If it is damaged, the internal ramp is inclined and very long, making it unviable for manual chairs without great assistance.
Terrazza dell’Angelo towards the Passetto (West). When you reach the roof, under the immense bronze statue, don’t look towards the city center yet. Look towards the Vatican side. You will see the entire Way of Conciliation aligned with the Dome and, to your right, the wall of the Passetto di Borgo (the Pope’s secret air passage). The sunset there produces unforgettable historical silhouettes.
